Dr. Jessica Lips is a board-certified, licensed chiropractor and founder of Ginkgo Chiropractic & Sensory Development Center in Berkeley, CA.
Dr. Jess specializes in prenatal and pediatric chiropractic and loves adjusting the whole family. She firmly believes that setting up the body to work at it's most efficient right from the beginning is the best way to keep kids healthy and thriving. Children can be seen as little as right after birth and are always treated with the utmost care and gentle touch. The pressure for a newborn is like that of you pushing on your eyelid and can still be instrumental in helping with colic, ear infections, constipation, torticollis, etc. Right now, kiddos from birth to 1 year old are checked for FREE at Ginkgo Chiropractic if another family member is under care.
Dr. Jess is an active member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and is Webster certified, a gentle chiropractic technique for balancing the pelvis and pelvic ligaments during pregnancy. She is also trained in Cranial-Sacral Therapy, Sacral-Occipital Therapy, Biogiometric Integration, and practices Full Spine Adjusting.
Growing up as a multi-sport player herself, Dr. Jess loves helping athletes, young and old, heal from an injury, optimize their performance levels or simply stay balanced and toned.
Dr. Jess is unique in the fact that she uses chiropractic adjustments along with functional exercises, diet coaching, supportive whole-food supplementation and soft tissue techniques.
Whoever you are and whatever you do, make sure you do it functioning at your best!

Chiropractic is a "whole person approach". This approach to wellness means looking for underlying causes of any disturbance or disruption (which may or may not be causing symptoms at the time) and make whatever interventions and lifestyle adjustments that would optimize the conditions for normal function. There are often 3 phases to healing with Chiropractic care: Relief, Corrective, and Wellness Care.
Our job and our passion is to understand you and to understand the story your spine tells us. When your brain can't send the appropriate signals down your spinal cord to the rest of your body, you simply aren't living your best life. Some people experience this with pain, others experience it as with symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, depression, gut disturbances, insomnia, etc.
We're here to help get you back on track.
Relief Care is often the first stage of care for people that come into chiropractic offices. This type of care is designed to eliminate or reduce the majority of the discomfort and stabilize the condition in the shortest amount of time. During this phase of care, visits will be frequent. Repeated visits will be required to reduce or eliminate the symptoms.
The objective of the Corrective or Restorative Care phase of your treatment program is to continue to correct any underlying spinal injury as well as strengthening the muscles, improving spinal function and providing more complete healing of tissues and organ systems. Visits occur at a reduced frequency and care is supplemented by exercises, nutritional advice and/or modification of your daily and work habits. Remember, many of the conditions for which people seek chiropractic care have developed over many years and therefore, it takes time to correct these conditions.
Wellness care is designed to maintain your improved health and spinal function, and prevent the return of the original condition once spinal correction has been attained. Regular attention catches small problems before they become serious. Prevention saves time and money by helping you stay well. Chiropractic visits, exercise and a sensible diet will help you enjoy the best of health well into the future.
Many think that health is merely the absence of pain or symptoms. A wellness approach to health means adopting a variety of healthy habits for optimum function on all levels - physical, mental, social, and spiritual. Because of its focus on the nerve system, chiropractic care can be an important part of a wellness lifestyle. The nerve system controls the function of virtually every aspect of our lives. So, maintaining a properly functioning nerve system is essential if you want to be your very best.
What part of your body is being overworked? Although it may be able to sustain the impact now, pushing the limits of an imbalanced body, will eventually give way. Are your glutes or quads not activating? Has your leg never been the same since knee surgery? Do you feel like you have weak shoulder(s)? Do you feel tightness in areas that you feel you shouldn't, especially upon exertion? Does one foot just not seem like it knows where it is in space? These are all red flags telling us there is an imbalance in the nervous system resulting in an imbalance in your muscles and tissues. Therapeutic, functional exercises are great for creating more stabilization and strength to those areas of concern.
You have 26 bones in your foot. All those joints need to be functioning within their normal range of motion in order to absorb the shock your foot experiences each time it hits the ground, otherwise, your body's entire biomechanics becomes compromised. Your ankle and first toe also need to have full flexion and extension, otherwise this increases the workload on your achilles and calf. Since the entire body is connected, we will check all areas from head to toe that may be contributing to this lack of joint motion and use Rapid Release therapy and other soft tissue modalities to break up any scar tissue or residuals of tissue damage from a previous injury, if necessary.
Does your scapula wing out? Do you have tight hamstrings and can't touch your toes? Or do you feel like none of your joints are stable? We can deal with this in a few ways. Functional exercises, combined with neuro-therapies, chiropractic adjustments and possible nutritional counseling can help even out muscle tone and get to the bottom of the true imbalance. By using an Interferential Stimulator, we can "wake up" muscles that for whatever reason, have not been able to register properly with the brain. We will also optimize the brain's communication with the muscular system if it seems like the uneven muscle tone distribution is more pattern-like. Lastly, nutritional deficits can make it hard to gain muscle tone and keep ligaments stable. Dr. Jess is connected with multiple laboratories & supplement companies, making it easy & convenient to process lab testing & order quality supplements if necessary.
Remember we talked about the 26 bones in your foot? They all are rich with something called Mechanoreceptors. These little electrical signals are key to telling the brain where the foot is in space. This is true for all joints. The more we can activate proper movement biomechanics in the joints of the body, the more the brain gets information of where they are in space and can properly choose things like how to strike a soccer ball, to perfectly flick the wrist when shooting a basketball/hockey puck/lacrosse ball, or how to avoid not rolling an ankle when running on uneven ground. Our muscles do nothing without the governing voice of our Brain and Nerve System. With specific chiropractic adjustments, we can get the joints moving again, but most importantly, increase the signals going from body back to brain and brain back to body.
Ginkgo Chiropractic & Sensory Development Center offers a program for individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADD/ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, or undiagnosed problems with hyperactivity, impulsivity, or an unexplained lack of productivity. We provide children, teens, and adults a way to manage and improve their lives without the use of medication. Our drug-free, natural approach helps these individuals through chiropractic adjustments, neurofunctional therapy, and nutritional testing/counseling.
Who is eligible for the Sensory Development Center?
Those with the following or similar conditions:
**No diagnosis is needed. If you suspect any sensory or neurodevelopmental issues at all, you can be evaluated to see if you or your child would be a good fit for the program.
What is neurofunctional therapy?
Our neurofunctional therapy approach is primarily evaluated, integrated, and monitored through working with the primitive reflexes. The primitive reflexes are an outward expression of proper neurological wiring. We know that our senses are directly connected with each reflex and when properly integrated, the brain/body connection is then able to adapt properly to the given environment.
How is neurofunctional therapy different than occupational or physical therapy?
Neurofunctional therapy looks directly at the underlying neurological cause of the child's behavior or ability to cope with their surroundings. When we are able to help improve proper neurological function, additional therapies such as occupational, speech, language, behavior, visual and physical therapy given to the individual will be that much more effective.
Does neurofunctional therapy replace behavior therapies like ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)?
No - Neurosensory therapy does not replace behavior therapies or any other therapies such as speech & language, occupational, etc. In fact, if an individual is receiving such therapies, neurosensory therapy will enhance their ability to succeed in those therapies. Neurosensory therapy supports the connection/communication between the body and brain and helps the sensory input to that individual and be able to have an equal and appropriate response/behavior.
How is a doctor of chiropractic's approach differ from that of a medical doctor's approach?
A chiropractic physician looks at the root cause of any condition/challenge the individual is facing. No one knows exactly what your body needs from one second to the next, but your individual body does. Chiropractors know that the nervous system carries that knowledge and life force that brings life and healing to every individual. Chiropractors are the only healthcare professionals that are trained in the detection, correction, and elimination of nervous system interferences. These interferences are called subluxations and they can prevent individuals from reaching their full health potential. Chiropractors treat these subluxations so the body can then begin to heal.
We get it. You're frustrated.
Something doesn't feel right but you just can't seem to figure out what.
It's time to find out. At Ginkgo Chiropractic, Dr. Jess has done extensive training in whole-food nutrition, lab analysis, organ reflex testing and therapeutic supplement protocols. She'll help you step by step, to peel back the layers that have been dragging you down and help you get back to being you again.
Your Brain is your most precious organ. Without it, we are not who we are.
However, when the Brain experiences specific types of stress such as physical, chemical and emotional trauma, we find it harder and harder to think clearly, process tasks, remember things, focus and be ourselves.
At Ginkgo Chiropractic & Sensory Development Center, we help kids, teens and adults optimize their brain function. By using appropriate lab testing, functional therapies, specific brain-based diet recommendations, cranial-sacral therapy, chiropractic adjustments and supplement protocols, we provide a personalized plan to help you and your brain finally settle into a state of ease where it can heal and reboot.
ALL DISEASE BEGINS IN THE GUT.
This statement cannot be more true. Did you know that besides the brain, the gut harbors the second most populated area for neurotransmitters? That means that people who deal with brain fog, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, are often first and foremost dealing with some form of imbalance in the gastrointestinal system. We use blood, stool & saliva analysis along with a thorough symptom intake to determine the root cause so we can accurately take you through your options for recovery. Through personal and professional experience, Dr. Jess is passionate about helping you find your own personal healing program that fits you.
Whether it is weight loss you're looking for or overall health & wellness, book an initial consultation and you can see if Ginkgo is the right fit for you.
Anger fits. Depression. Anxiety. PMS. Water weight gain. Mood swings. Difficulty conceiving.
These are all indicative of an endocrine system that is not happy. By additionally analyzing the Adrenal, Thyroid, Hypothalamus, and Pituitary Glands, we can start to see how this emotional rollercoaster came about.
We understand it's not easy to admit that you feel "wrong," but if you're ready, we are here to support you and listen to what you've been experiencing. With patience, persistence and trust, we can help you start putting one foot in front of the other instead of continuing to fall backwards.
There's no better time than now to get back to being yourself.

Doctors of chiropractic are well trained professionals who provide patients with safe, effective care for a variety of common conditions. Their extensive education has prepared them to identify patients who have special risk factors and to get those patients the most appropriate care, even if that requires referral to a medical specialist.
With courtesy of the American Chiropractic Association, a more detailed description of why chiropractic is extremely safe can be located on their website when clicking the link above.
Everyone tends to react a little bit different to the first adjustment. Most tend to feel a little sore at first. This is a much different soreness than before, though. Since the nervous system is recalibrating, it will activate different muscle fibers in order to try and hold the adjustment and realign the spine on it’s own. These fibers can get sore, just like working out for the first time in a while.
Dr. Jess recommends to drink lots of water, maybe apply ice if necessary (not heat), and to relax for that first day after the adjustment. Dr. Jess will also most likely give you a call within the first few days to check in on you and see how you are doing.
Simply put, because they have a nerve system too.
Birth is a beautiful and empowering event. However, it can sometimes end up being somewhat stressful for the mother as well as the newborn. Whether it is a home birth or hospital birth, Baby's head still spends a significant amount of time pressed up against the vaginal wall and pelvic bones. Baby may also have experienced more strain as they exit the birth canal, especially if extra force was utilized.
When Dr. Jess checks newborns, there is no cracking, no rotating, no quick movements. She uses as gentle of a pressure as you would use when pressing on your eyelid. She is also trained in Cranial-Sacral therapy, a technique that checks the natural rhythmic movement between the skull of the child and the sacrum. Alleviating any pressure or discomfort the child is feeling can have a multitude of effects on growth, feeding, elimination, demeanor, immune system, sleeping, colic, ear infections, torticollis, etc. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association's webpage is a fantastic source for skeptical moms who want to see all the research there has been done not only on Chiropractic but also on Pediatric Chiropractic.
As a child gets older, it isn't uncommon for he or she to bump into this, smack that, fall off of this or run into that. Overall, children are very resilient, but the build-up of many of these small traumas can cause the body to compensate, even at such a young age. This is especially true for children active in sports. Again, pediatric adjustments are very gentle and they often end up loving going to the chiropractor.
With kids that seem to have some sort of Developmental Delay Syndrome, ADHD, Autism and/or trouble processing sensory input, Dr. Jess uses neuro-therapies, dietary and supplementation recommendations as well as chiropractic care as needed. The labels that have been put on these kids at such a young age, should not define them. Often times, the labels and symptoms are actually a window into how their brain is functioning and how Dr. Jess can help get it back on track.
